Earlier this year we briefly discussed the benefits of going programmable when it comes to your thermostat. We want to stress the fact that your thermostat should operate in alignment with your family’s use of your home. If you are still using a manual thermostat, you are not heating or cooling your home efficiently. A modern thermostat—a programmable thermostat in particular—is a very wise and beneficial investment for many reasons, which we’ve outlined below.
Our programmable thermostats come with displays that make it easy for anyone in your home to present different temperatures for different times of the day. You can even select a model that allows you to differentiate between weekday and weekend programs, or choose a Wi-Fi model that lets you change the settings from your computer or mobile device. These “smart” thermostats can even give you an alert that it’s time to change your air filter.
It’s recommended that for optimal energy savings—and thus money savings—that you aim for a “setback” period of at least eight hours. This means setting your thermostat back a few degrees, such as while you’re sleeping. You can expect to shave off about 1% of your heating or cooling bill for each degree that you adjust your settings over that eight hour period.
With older thermostat models, we used to be forced to turn our HVAC systems off in order to save energy and money. A programmable thermostat allows you to reach your ideal thermostat before you start your day, or by the time you return home, rather than shutting off your air conditioner on a summer day to return home from work to a stifling hot home.
