North Atlanta HVAC: What Condition is Your Insulation In?
November 12, 2012

There’s an old saying that goes “Out of sight, out of mind”. That’s the attitude that many homeowners in North Atlanta have towards the insulation in their home. However, that kind of attitude towards such an important part of your home could lead to trouble in the long run. We’ve put together a few considerations that you should take into account as you start to think about insulation.

Types of Insulation

There are several different types of insulation available on the market.

  • Rolls and Batts – This is the typical pink or yellow rolls of insulation that you see in many homes.
  • Loose-Fill Insulation – This made out of fiberglass or some kind of cellulose. It is sprayed into the spaces between walls, floor and ceilings.
  • Rigid Foam – This type of insulation is typically more expensive but is highly effective. It is similar to drywall in that you hang it on your walls using screws.
  • Foam-in-place – This is another type of insulation that is sprayed into the crevices of your walls, ceilings and floors.

What is R Value

Insulation is assigned an R value. What this tells consumers is how resistant the material is to letting heat escape through it. The higher the R value, the more insulating the material is. By using insulation with a higher R value, you increase your home’s ability to retain heat.

How to Check Your Insulation

The most important place to check your insulation is in your attic. The reason for this is because of the tendency for heat in your home to rise into your attic and escape through poor insulation. In most attics, the insulation is exposed so inspecting it is easy. Here are some things to look for:

  • Type of Insulation – While most new homes have modern insulation installed in them, older homes might not. They could also have loose-fill insulation. If this is the case, it’s probably time for an upgrade.
  • Condition of the insulation – The insulation should completely fill the spaces between the ceiling joists. If you notice that the insulation is matted down from age or if there is significant spaces between the insulation and the joist, it might be time to replace it. You can also have a professional contractor add more insulation on top of the existing insulation.
  • Damage – Check the ceiling above your insulation. If you notice leaks or water damage, it’s likely that the insulation below is damaged. Also check for damage from rodents or birds
