Sealed Furnaces vs. Atmosphere Furnaces | Comfort Zone
February 8, 2016

Furnaces have been around since the beginning of home heating, and they remain one of the best ways to provide comfort through even the coldest winters. This is because the technology of furnaces continues to advance, and newer models have greater energy efficiency ratings (AFUE) than ever before. If you’re in the market for a new gas furnace installation for your home, you have some excellent options for units that will save you money while providing the warmth your family needs for the season.

The Sealed Furnace Difference

One of the advances in furnaces that has made them more efficient and safer is the development of the sealed furnace. The conventional furnace model is an atmosphere furnace, which means that it draws on the air within a home for the combustion process. The air enters through a grill on the furnace cabinet and goes straight to the gas burners, where the mixture of air and gas is combusted to create heat. However, there are drawbacks to the process. First, an open combustion chamber will lose some of its heat. Second, it’s easier for exhaust to escape from the chamber and enter the house. Third, because the furnace is pulling air out of the house in order to run, it will cause air from outside the house to rush in—cold, dry air.

The sealed furnace has the combustion chamber closed off from the interior of the house. It draws the air for the combustion process from the outdoors through a pipe the opens on the side of the home. A sealed combustion chamber makes a furnace much more energy-efficient, and it also won’t result in making the indoor air too dry. It’s also a much safer set-up: no exposed burner flames, and reduced chance of backdrafts down the furnace flu or carbon monoxide entering the living spaces.
