A Short-Cycling Furnace: Why It Happens and What to Do
February 15, 2016

One of the more common signs of trouble that a homeowner may encounter with their furnace is when it starts to short-cycle. This describes when a furnace doesn’t finish its complete heating cycle, instead turning it off prematurely—only to start up again a short time later and repeat the process.

Short-cycling is damaging to furnace components because of all the extra stress it places on them. It also wastes energy (the furnace uses the most power during the start-up cycle) and causes uneven heating throughout a house. If you have a short-cycling furnace, call our technicians right away to see if you needs repairs or a replacement furnace.

Reasons a furnace may short-cycle

  • Clogged air filter: The furnace filter needs to be replaced once a month during the winter. If it becomes too clogged, it will lead to excess heat trapped inside the furnace, triggering the limit switch that will turn off the heating cycle too early. Clean the filter out to see if this fixes the problem. Otherwise call for repair technicians.
  • Malfunctioning thermostat: The source may lie in a thermostat that’s sensing the wrong temperatures and turning the furnace off before it should. It will be hard to determine this on your own, but experienced HVAC repair technicians can trace the problem to its source.
  • Oversized furnace: This is the most serious problem, and it often occurs because of amateur installation. (Put this on the list of reasons to rely only on professionals when it comes to installing a furnace.) A furnace that’s too powerful for the space it’s supposed to heat will so rapidly raise the temperature that the furnace will falsely register that it has completed the heating cycle and then shut off. Unfortunately, the only solution to this problem is to have the furnace replaced. Professionals will make sure to carefully size the new system so it won’t short-cycle.
