November 16, 2015

The cooler air is settling in, changing your HVAC needs from cooling to heating. But this doesn’t mean you should just switch to heat mode and forget about your air conditioner’s outdoor unit. Air conditioner components that reside outdoors can take a beating during the winter months, but not if you protect them properly with winterizing. Not sure how to properly winterize your AC in Alpharetta, GA? The cooling pros from Comfort Zone Heating & Cooling are here to help.

3 Steps

The first step is disconnecting your outdoor unit from the main power of your home. This is not a tricky job for our technicians, but it may be for you, which is why it is very important to allow them to do this task. Disconnecting your outdoor unit from your home’s electrical power is important because it protects your outdoor unit and also ensures that your air conditioner can’t be accidentally turned on during the winter months.

Once the power is disconnected, it is important to remove any and all debris from the top of the cabinet and immediately inside the cabinet. This includes lawn clippings, twigs and branches or anything else you find in and around the outdoor components. You’ll also want to create a clear, open space around the cabinet if there isn’t one there already.

Last, you want to cover the entire outdoor unit in a secure way that will last all winter long. You may be able to purchase in insulated cover for your outdoor unit at a hardware store or use a tarp. It is important to batten down any covering, particularly tarps, with rocks, ropes, etc., to make sure the cover doesn’t blow away or slip off the cabinet.

Taking care of your air conditioning equipment helps ensure longevity and less problems come cooling time. Need help winterizing your AC? Call us today!
