Atlanta HVAC and AC Tips for Having a Party | Comfort Zone
June 20, 2016

If your home’s air conditioning system received a professional installation, it will be sized just right for the needs of your family. But what happens when a larger number of people than usual are inside your home, such as when you throw a party this summer? A residential air conditioner can have trouble keeping up with maintaining cool temperatures—and you can’t simply have a new, more powerful system installed just for one night! Below we’ve gathered some tips on how you can make air conditioning your home easier when you’ve got a large number of guests over.

ONE: Make sure the AC isn’t suffering from any repair problems

It’s critical that the air conditioner is in the best shape possible before it has to take on the extra work of keeping numerous people (each who bring their own heat and humidity) comfortable. Make certain that the system has already had its annual inspection and tune-up. Listen carefully for strange noises from the cabinets, check that there is no ice forming along the evaporator coil, and watch out for hot spots around the house. All of these are warnings that the air conditioner needs repair service.

TWO: Dehumidify the house as much as possible in the days before

Humidity is a major comfort problem in Georgia, and extra people in your home will increase the humidity because of exhalations. Plan ahead to squeeze out as much humidity from the walls, carpets, and furnishings as possible in the week before the party. You can do this by running the air conditioner extra long, or have a whole-house dehumidifier installed.

THREE: Start the AC early on the night of the party

Don’t delay turning on the air conditioner until the guests start arriving. You want the house cooler than it normally is to help absorb the additional heat. We recommend that four hours before the first guest is scheduled to show up that you set the thermostat 5°F below your normal comfort level.
