Recharging Your Atlanta AC Refrigerant- NOT an Annual Task
August 10, 2015

Your air conditioner cools your home by removing both heat and humidity. It is able to do this with help from a chemical called refrigerant; this chemical facilitates the transfer of heat. Every air conditioning system needs refrigerant in order to cool, and each air conditioner is made to work with a specific amount of refrigerant as specified by the manufacturer of the unit. What is different about refrigerant from something like gasoline in a car is that your air conditioning system doesn’t consume refrigerant; ideally, the level of refrigerant in your system will stay at the same level for the life of the system. The only way the level of refrigerant is altered is from some kind of problem, typically a refrigerant leak.

What Happens When a Leak Develops?

Refrigerant leaks can develop in many different areas of your air conditioning system; this is one of the reasons why it’s important to hired trained technicians to repair a refrigerant leak. When refrigerant leaks from your system, it creates an imbalance in the heat release/cooling process because the amount of refrigerant in the system has been lowered. The result can be less cool air, no cool air and/or icing on the evaporator coils. The leak doesn’t allow your AC system to operate normally, which will put stress on the system if left to operate that way for an extended period of time.

I Don’t Have to Recharge Every Year?

Simply put: no. Recharging the refrigerant in your system only happens when a problem has developed that has lowered the level of refrigerant. If you find yourself needing to recharge your refrigerant every year or even every two years, it may be time to consider replacing that particular unit.
