Is Your Atlanta AC Not Cooling Your Home? Find Out Why
April 25, 2016

The temperature is rising, and it’s not surprising, since summer is not that far away. But it’s easier to handle hotter weather when you have a dependable air conditioning system at work in your home.

But what if the AC doesn’t seem to be doing its job? If you have turned on your cooling system, but it just isn’t… cooling… then you’ll want the problem looked into right away. Below are some reasons that your air conditioner may be falling down on the job, and what you can do about it.

Clogged air filter

One of the basic tasks that you need to do to maintain your air conditioning system during the summer is to change out the filter on a regular basis. (Or, in the case of a permanent filter, clean it.) This job should be done every 1–3 months. Less expensive filters, which you can purchase in packs from a hardware store, will need to be cleaned more frequently. If you let the filter stay in place—or you haven’t changed it since the end of last summer—the clogging in it will block airflow through the system, and it will limit how well the AC works.

Incorrectly set thermostat

Make sure that the thermostat is at the right settings. You may have an older program running in the thermostat that is resulting in the wrong temperatures for your home. The thermostat could also be malfunctioning, but this will require professional repair work.

Dirty outdoor unit

Check the outdoor cabinet (the condenser) of the AC to see if there is excessive dirt and dust, or perhaps garden mulch, on it. A blocked condenser makes it hard for an air conditioner to move heat out of the house. Also make sure that plants and shrubs are trimmed so the condenser has sufficient space to work.
