Ice on My AC Isn’t Normal? - Comfort Zone Heating & Cooling
September 14, 2015

While other areas of the country are starting to see cooler temperatures, we are still in the thick of our hot weather here in Alpharetta, GA. This means your AC is running around the clock to make your home dry, cool and comfortable in the midst of our heat and humidity. If you noticed that there’s ice on your air conditioner, however, this isn’t something to ignore, even if your air conditioner appears to operating just fine.

Why Isn’t Ice Normal?

There are two sides to your air conditioner: the side that releases heat, which is where your condenser is, and the side that cools, which is where your evaporator is. There is a delicate balance between these two areas that allows them to work in sync to provide your home with the cooling it needs. This balance ensures that the warm parts don’t get too warm and the cool parts don’t get too cold. Maintaining this balance means that your system has to have the right amount of refrigerant in it as well as the right amount of air flow. When these two items are somehow off, the heat release/cooling process becomes imbalanced. There are a few reasons this can happen:

  • There’s a refrigerant leak
  • The air filter is clogged
  • One, or both, of the fans isn’t working properly

Ice forms when the warm and cool parts become hot and cold from the imbalance caused by one of the three issues listed above. Condensation naturally forms due to the disparate temperatures between the hot and cold parts, then quickly turns into ice.

Your AC will never develop ice unless there’s a problem. So if you see ice on your air conditioner, call the people you can trust for all of your air conditioning repair needs: Comfort Zone HVAC.
