5 Tips for Saving on AC Energy
June 23, 2023

Innovations in HVAC technology have come a long way in the past decade or two. Smart thermostats, heat pumps, and zoned heating and cooling systems are just some of the energy-efficient options available to homeowners in Atlanta and North Georgia.

A heat pump is one of many energy-efficient heating and cooling options available to Atlanta

But what if you’re not ready or able to upgrade to an energy-efficient HVAC system just yet? No worries. There are some simple, low-tech ways to keep comfortable and save energy (and money!) during the cooling season.

1. Refresh Attic Insulation

Insulation reduces the flow of heat into your home in the summer. With adequate insulation, your air conditioner will not have to run as long or as often to keep your home cool. You may even be able to set your thermostat a bit higher and still feel comfortable.

2. Turn on the Fans

Did you know that most ceiling fans have a winter and a summer setting? When the fan is in the summer setting, the blades spin in the direction that forces warmer air up toward the ceiling, making the rest of the room feel cooler.

Portable fans are also a great option. Having one blow on you when you’re sleeping or sitting in one place can keep you comfortable without having to lower the thermostat. There is one caution, however: Don’t use a window fan to blow outdoor air into a room when it’s warmer than the indoor air. You’ll just be making the room hotter.

3. Close the Curtains

Sunlight pouring into a room can raise the temperature several degrees. You can keep the whole house cooler by closing up window coverings in rooms that people (or plants) aren’t using during the day.

4. Take Advantage of Cooler Nights

Even in our neck of the woods, there are times when the night and early morning temperatures may be cool enough to go without AC. Take advantage of this by opening up windows to let the cool air in. Then, when outdoor temps start to rise later in the morning, close everything back up. With the cooler air now sealed in, you’ll be able to stay comfortable longer before having to turn your AC back on.

5. Get a Professional AC Tune-up

Even an older air conditioner will operate more energy-efficiently when it’s properly tuned up and maintained. A worn belt, dirty filter, or loose nuts and bolts can all make your AC unit work harder and use more energy. A professional AC tune-up ensures your AC system runs as efficiently as possible. It can also help keep your current unit going until you’re ready for an HVAC upgrade.
