Atlanta Air Conditioning FAQ: Are My Ducts in Good Shape?
August 21, 2013

The duct system serves to move conditioned air throughout your home, branching out from the main system to the various rooms and hallways in the household. It can be hard to examine your duct system for problems, since they usually appear in the walls, the attic and similar hard-to-reach places. However, there are some ways to tell if your ducts are in good shape, and ways to address the issue if they aren’t.

The most telling sign of ductwork problems is an overall lack of air flow. If the air isn’t getting through your vents, it may be the sign of a blocked duct, or a duct that  is leaking. If your air flow is normal through most of the house, but is reduced or stopped entirely in one section, then this may be the culprit.

Leaks in the ductwork can also lead to increased dust particles in the air and a general lowering of indoor air quality. Sealing the ducts and/or hiring a professional for a duct cleaning service can resolve the issue.

You might also notice that the air in one section of the house is warmer than it is in other sections. In such a case, the problem may be that your ductwork runs through a non-conditioned part of the house such as the attic and/or lacks the proper insulation. If the ducts themselves are warm – because they’re in a hot attic, for instance – they may warm the air inside the ducts, leading to a loss of cooling power on the other end.

All of these are signs that your ducts aren’t in the best shape they can be, which costs you money in higher electric bills as the air conditioning system struggles to overcome the problem.
