Do I Really Need AC Repair? - Comfort Zone Heating & Cooling
A dirty AC air filter restricts airflow and reduces your AC system’s ability to cool, while driving up energy costs.

Sometimes it’s obvious that you need a certified HVAC technician to check out your central AC system. For instance, if the AC system doesn’t run at all, you wouldn’t hesitate to arrange for a service call. Then there are times when the AC runs, but something seems off. Some homeowners might be tempted to put off calling for repairs in this case, but here are four scenarios you should not ignore.

1. Air from the AC System Doesn’t Feel Cool Enough

There are a few things that could result in less-than-cool air coming out of your vents, but the most serious cause is low refrigerant. Running the AC unit without sufficient refrigerant could severely damage the compressor, which is very expensive to repair or replace. For this reason, it’s best not to use the AC until you have it checked out.

2. AC System Isn’t Blowing Enough Air

When the blown air is cool but the stream coming out of the vents is weak, the first thing you should do is check the air filter. A dirty filter restricts the flow of air through the AC system. If the filter is clean, or you replace it and you still have low air volume, it’s time to call for AC repair.

3. Electric Bills Are Unusually High

Sometimes the first sign you notice that something’s off with your air conditioner is your energy bill. If you see a sudden spike in your electricity consumption but have not changed your cooling or energy-usage patterns, you may need an AC tune-up or other repair.

4. AC System Makes Odd Noises

Every air conditioner has normal operational sounds, but banging, buzzing, or screeching is not part of the normal range. If your AC system makes these or any other unusual noises, you should call in an AC tech.

Arranging for a service call whenever you think your AC system is not performing the way it should is the best way to prevent an AC breakdown and ensure your comfort throughout the cooling season.
