Atlanta AC Signs of Stress in Fall | Comfort Zone HVAC
October 24, 2016

One of the difficulties of living in a place where warm weather continues deep into the fall is that air conditioning systems must put in much more work than normally expected. Fall is the period when homeowners arrange to have maintenance done on their heating systems. (If you haven’t done this yet, we strongly urge you to get it done sooner rather than later.) Air conditioning systems, however, have their maintenance done in spring, and so they have a long stretch to go before their next tune-up and inspection. Late fall is a time when the stress accumulated since the last tune-up can take a heavy toll on an AC.

We recommend you pay special attention to your air conditioning system at this time of the year to catch warnings that it’s under too much stress and needs repair technicians to take a look at it. Here are some signs to look for:

  • Loud operation: Any mechanical device suffering from excess strain can start to make more noise as it operates, and the AC is no exception. Grinding and shrieking noises are the most common cautionary sounds, since they indicate trouble with motors from dust and loss of lubrication.
  • Ice on the indoor coil: No, it isn’t normal to see ice beginning to form on any part of an air conditioner. An AC doesn’t use ice to cool down the air. If ice does appear, it means something is preventing the coil from absorbing sufficient heat to cool down its refrigerant. This can be dust and dirt on the coil, or a more serious repair issue such as refrigerant leaks.
  • Hot spots in the rooms: If you’re detecting rooms that feel warmer than they should be when the air conditioner is running, it often means the AC is starting to lose its effectiveness. This could be due to many different malfunctions, so call experts to investigate.
  • Short-cycling: This is when the air conditioner’s compressor turns on and off rapidly, never completing its cooling cycle. Something may be wrong with the compressor (and that requires repairs right away) or it may be an issue with a clogged filter.
